This was woven as a response to Aberdeenshire artist Alex Kay‘s drawing of a tree and roots. This was the first piece in which I used the transparent overlay technique written about by the American weaver Alice Schlein. My warp and weft were both single ends of black and white. Rather than apply weave structures in the usual way, I applied a transparent overlay of a 16 end satin. To my astonishment this appeared in the final cloth as an 8 end double weave satin. Perhaps I shouldn’t have been so surprised.
